My beautiful paper boat garland

Yesterday I arrived home from a busy day at work for a pleasant surprise - the paper boat garland I bought from Iro had just arrived!

I was eager to get it and add it to a rather serious wall in my home office, where I have my piano and my three diplomas. It looks much better now, right?

Ontem cheguei a casa depois de um cansativo dia de trabalho e tinha uma surpresa à minha espera - a grinalda de barcos de papel que comprei à Iro tinha chegado!

Estava desejosa de a pendurar numa parede mais séria do meu escritório, onde tenho o piano e os meus três diplomas. Fica mito melhor assim, não acham?

Yes, donating is something I had already thought about some while ago, but got really inspired by this post by Astrid. For now, I'll choose animal rescue associations from the Algarve. The first will be Associação de Defesa dos Animais de Portimão (they have a blog and a facebook page). For each item I sell, 10% of the value will be donated to this association. And, for my clients to be sure that I'm a honest, reliable person, I'll send the bank transfer receipt to the buyer. So, hop into my shop to check out all these goodies! Thank you so much for your help!

Making earrings is fun and easy! :: Fazer brincos é giro e fácil

The other day I went to a store to buy earwire to fix some of my old earrings, and then I realised that this is an activity that I could further explore and thus go deeper into my creative skills. So yesterday I grabbed some old necklaces and made earrings out of them. And here they are! 

I wrapped the earrings so the hubby could take them to his work to show/sell (?) to his co-workers. I must take proper pictures, though, applying what I learned last year on the product photography course hosted by Diana S. Brennan.

Anyway, I'm not quite sure where to go from here - whether to try to sell them on Etsy or offline only, or whether I'll make more earrings or stop for now. Will see...

No outro dia fui a uma loja comprar arames para arranjar alguns dos meus brincos velhinhos, e apercebi-me que esta é uma área que eu podia explorar mais e assim usar a minha criatividade para outras coisas. Então, ontem peguei nalguns colares que já não uso e transformei-os em brincos. Aqui estão eles!

Embrulhei-os logo para o marido levá-los para o trabalho para mostrar/vender (?) às colegas. Tenho que tirar fotos decentes dos brincos, aplicando o que aprendi o ano passado no curso de fotografia de produtos com a Diana S. Brennan.

Seja como for, ainda não sei bem o que fazer a seguir - se vou tentar vendê-los na Etsy ou apenas offline, se vou fazer mais brincos ou se fico por aqui. Veremos...

Crochet additions to the bathroom

My friend and geologist colleague Ana makes beautiful things in crochet (for instance, the small white basket in the first picture is hers). 

Yesterday I got a set of seven facial scrubbies, a headband and a laundry net, all beautifully organized in a small basket that fits my small bathroom shelf. Lovely, indeed, don't you agree? 

I've already tried (many times really, starting in my childhood) to learn how to crochet, but I just can't do it... I'll stick with sewing - that I can! 

Anyway, Ana is considering opening an Etsy shop with all her crochet goodies - she has already found a cute name for her brand, very geology-like. I'll let you know when it opens!

A minha amiga e colega geóloga Ana faz coisas muitas giras em crochet (por exemplo, o pequeno cesto branco que está na primeira foto deste post foi ela que fez).

Ontem, recebi um conjunto de sete discos para limpeza facial, uma fita para o cabelo e uma daquelas redinhas para a máquina de lavar roupa, tudo muito bem organizado dentro de um pequeno cesto que cabe perfeitamente na minha pequena prateleira da casa de banho. Está o máximo, não acham?

Eu já tentei (demasiadas vezes, desde a infância) aprender a fazer crochet, mas simplesmente não consigo... Vou ficar-me pela costura, que isso sim, consigo fazer!

A Ana está a pensar abrir uma loja na Etsy com as suas peças - até já arranjou um nome muito giro para a loja, muito geológico... Quando abrir a loja, aviso!

How to make fabric bookmarks :: Como fazer marcadores para livros em tecido

Fabric bookmarks are another extremely easy sewing project and they make cute gifts!

All you have to do is grab 2 pieces of fabric (if the fabric is too light, you should add a layer of canvas as interfacing), choose the size for the bookmark and draw it on the fabric. Then sew all around the rectangle and finally trim the fabric with a zigzag scissors. Easy as that! Obviously, we can get creative and add details to the bookmark, but this is the basic idea.

Marcadores de livros em tecido são outro projecto de costura extremamente fácil e que dá prendas giras!
Basta pegar em 2 pedaços de tecido (se o tecido for muito fino, convém acrescentar uma camada de lona entre os 2 pedaços de tecido para conferir mais rigidez ao marcador), marcar as medidas que queremos para o marcador, fazer uma costura à volta do rectângulo, e por fim aparar o tecido com uma tesoura em zigzag, para o tecido não desfiar. Tão simples quanto isto! Claro que podemos ser criativos e acrescentar pormenores, mas a ideia básica é esta.

I first read about Blurb on Astrid's blog. Blurb is a print-on-demand publisher that allows us to create and publish our own book. Astrid has published quite a few lovely photo books and I fell in love with the idea. 

A primeira vez que li sobre a Blurb foi no blog da Astrid. A Blurb é uma companhia americana que publica livros on-demand, permitindo a qualquer pessoa criar e publicar o seu próprio livro. A Astrid já publicou uns quantos livros de fotos muito giros e eu adorei a ideia.

So far I've made two Blurb books. The first is entitled "My first year in the crafting world" and it is a collection of the crafts I made throughout 2010.

Até agora, fiz dois livros Blurb. O primeiro chama-se qualquer coisa como "O meu primeiro ano no mundo dos crafts" (o título original é em inglês) e reune a maioria das peças que fiz ao longo de 2010.

The second one was my Valentine's gift for the hubby, called "Our life 2002-2010" (the original title is in portuguese), and gathers pictures of us since we met, back in 2002.

O segundo, chamado "A nossa vida 2002-2010", foi a minha prenda de São Valentim para o marido, e reúne fotografias nossas desde que nos conhecemos em 2002.

In January I started another book on my everyday life as a scientist, but unfortunately it got forgotten in the middle of other things... So today I'm sharing the few pages I made describing a bit of my life as a post-doctoral fellow in biological oceanography.

Em Janeiro comecei outro livro sobre o meu dia-a-dia como cientista, mas infelizmente esse projecto foi ficando esquecido no meio das outras coisas... Hoje vou então partilhar as poucas páginas que fiz, onde descrevo a minha vida como pos-doc na área da oceanografia biológica.

How to make coasters :: Como fazer bases para copos

Coasters are the easiest sewing project ever! So here's a very basic how-to:

Fazer bases para copos em tecido é um dos projectos de costura mais fáceis! Então, aqui fica um tutorial muito simples:

1. Cut 2x 12 cm (4.7 in) fabric squares (a heavy cotton is preferable, or else use a canvas square as interfacing).


1. Cortar 2 quadrados de tecido com 12 cm de lado (é preferível um tecido de algodão grosso; se for fininho, convém usar um quadrado de lona no meio).

2. Place the squares right sides together e sew all around with a 1 cm (0.4 in) seam and leaving a 5-7 cm (2-2.5 in) opening to turn the coaster.


2. Juntar os lados direitos dos quadrados de tecido e coser à volta com uma margem de 1 cm, deixando uma abertura de 5-7 cm para virar para o lado direito.

3. Clip corners.


3. Cortar os cantos.

4. Turn inside out through the opening, press and sew all around (to close the opening).


4. Virar para o lado direito através da abertura, engomar e coser à volta (para fechar a abertura).

And that's it!

How to make fabric bibs :: Como fazer babetes em tecido

Os babetes são um projecto rápido e fácil e dão um excelente presente. Aqui está um pequeno tutorial sobre como fazer babetes.


Bibs are an easy and quick project, and make an excellent gift. Here's a small tutorial on how to make bibs.


Usei o molde da Chickpea Sewing Studio, mas alterei-o um bocadinho.

É necessário um tecido giro para a parte da frente (um fat quarter é mais que suficiente para fazer 2 babetes), algodão turco para a parte de trás e fita de velcro.


I've used the bib pattern by Chickpea Sewing Studio, but I altered it a little.

You will need a beautiful fabric for the front (a fat quarter is more than enough for 2 bibs), cotton terry cloth for the back and velcro tape.

Cortar uma peça de tecido seguindo o molde. Em vez de cortar outra peça de turco, prefiro cortar um rectângulo, e depois coloco o tecido em cima do turco, com a parte do avesso para cima e coso os dois, deixando uma abertura para virar.


Cut one piece of fabric for the front, following the pattern. Instead of cutting another piece of terry cloth, I'd rather cut a rectangle, and then place the fabric with the wrong side up and sew the fabric and the terry cloth together, leaving an opening for turning.

Antes de virar, aparar o tecido e o turco. Depois, virar o babete para fora através da abertura.

Before turning, trim the fabric and terry cloth. Then, turn right side out through the opening.

Passar a ferro e coser à volta de todo o babete para fechar a abertura.

Press and top-stitch all around the bib to close the opening.

Coser a fita de velcro e já está!


Sew the velcro tape and you're done!
