September goals ~ Objectivos para Setembro

Time flies, no doubt about that... Let's get to my goals, shall we?
O tempo voa, não há dúvida... Vamos ver os meus objectivos, sim?

For August, I had planned the following:
Para Agosto tinha planeado o seguinte:

Work ~ Trabalho

Good morning everyone! Today I did it - I got up at 6 am and I'm getting closer to my goal of becoming an early riser!
I'm having a busy week ahead of me... It's the last week of my long summer vacation, although I'm going back to work only on the 12th, given that I'll be in a Greek island next week for a congress - and I can not call that work (although it is)...

Things I have to do this week include:

- going to the hairdresser
- go groceries shopping for the upcoming 2 weeks
- wash my car
- print my poster to take to the conference
- go to Lisbon for a medical appointment
- spend a day at the lab preparing an upcoming sampling campaign
- get everything ready for the start of the school year
- declutter a little more
- upload new music to my mp3 player
- mend some clothes and sew new pillows for the sofa (which, by the way, is now white!!)
- pack to Greece!!

- fazer compras para as próximas 2 semanas
- lavar o carro

Well, these are the most important! Oh, have I showed you the huge amount of clothes I got rid of?? Here it is:

As you can see, these are mostly brown, beige and orange items - colours that are not that good for me, according to the season colour analysis...
Well, see you tomorrow!

How to organize kids' clothes ~ Como organizar a roupa das crianças

August, for me, is THE month to declutter and organize my home and get everything ready for the new year (aka, September, Autumn and back-to-school).
I've been decluttering and organizing each room, each cabinet, each drawer in the house - it's a rather easy task, because I declutter and organize often throughout the year. The most difficult area to organize and keep organized has always been the kids' room. The renovations in their room are almost ready, and our trip to Ikea the other day was fruitful, except for the Tromso bunk bed that was not available... the kids will have to sleep on the floor for a while now...
Anyway, here's how I organize my children's closet:

1. Try on everything
We know kids' have high growth rates and it is most likely that clothes bought just a few months ago won't fit anymore. So I make my kids put on every item of clothing they have... It's a rather difficult task for them, putting on winter clothes on a 30ºC atmosphere, but that's the way it works the best... Then I group the clothes in the following categories: to keep, to pass from one kid to the other, to donate, to toss, to mend (I like to turn pants into shorts). My kids don't have that much clothes, so this selecting process doesn't take too much time.

1. Experimentar tudo

2. Take everything out of the closet
If there are still items inside the closet, such as bedding and towels, take them out. Clean the closet thouroghly (we actually painted the inside and the wooden doors). Make sure you have all the hangers, boxes and other accessories to organize the closet. Then, put the clothes back in. Since my two kids share the closet, their clothes are divided in tagged drawers and shelves. And because they wear the same size, I make symbols in their clothes to know what belongs to whom.

2. Tirar tudo do roupeiro

3. Make an inventory of the top shelves/cabinets
The top cabinet in my kids' closet is rarely opened and I end up forgetting what's inside... So I made an inventory and put in on the closet's door. The contents are things such as duvets, pillows, blankets, etc. (everything inside plastic bags and properly tagged).

Seems easy, right?
Here's a closer look at my kids' closet:

As you can see, I strive for simplicity, and I believe less is more (well, except regarding my own clothes...).
Each one of my kids have only two sets of towels (a big one and a smaller one; you can see two sets in the picture, one blue, the other green; the other sets are in use in their bathroom), three duvet covers, and I think three or four bedding sets.
In addition, instead of using a clothes storage system such as Ikea's Antonius (which I very much like), I repurposed an old bookshelf and a chest of drawers, and it works just fine!

Embellishing my planner ~ Embelezando a minha agenda

My planner is a plain A5 binder with a black cover. I always like to personalize the covers a little. My previous planner, now acting as a recipe file, had some of my favourite Cathy stripes.
Here's what I did with this one:

~ I wrote some meaningful thoughts with a silver pen
~ I add three beautiful small prints from Iro's shop (that I got from her as a gift when I bought this beautiful paper boat garland) - you may check the prints here, here and here

As you probably know by now, we've been redecorating our home. The keywords for our style (actually, my style - Jerome just goes with the flow) are:

~ minimal
~ modern
~ clean lines
~ white and neutrals with some spots of soft colours

One of the most important issues for me is keeping the flat surfaces clean and clutter-free. That includes my desk. The desk is supposed to have only the following on top of it:

~ the laptop or the netbook
~ a lamp
~ my sewing machine
~ one kardemumma vase with sewing utensils
~ two jars with office supplies

~ minimalista
~ moderno
~ linhas clean (simples e puras)

The jars are repurposed glass ones, one bigger for my pens and pencils, and a smaller one for clips, erasers and pencil sharpeners. I wasn't happy with the jars, though - they seemed rather dull... But then I found the solution to make them more interesting on Iro's blog - and it has everything to do with me! Music jars!

You can see Iro's instructions here. I tweaked it a little, though, using adhesive transparent paper to protect the sheet music. And, as I'm a classical music lover and piano player, I chose the sheet music carefully! The selected was one of my favourite pieces ever, Ballade in the Form of Variations on a Norwegian Folk Song, Op. 24, by norwegian composer Edvard Grieg (you can listen to this piece here, if you'd like). For the labels, I used a green cardboard matching the green office walls (although I'm seriously thinking about painting the walls white).

Looks good, right?

Oh boy! This week it is - we're going to Ikea for some serious shopping! I've been planning this trip for more than a month now, and let me tell you, it has not been an easy task.
It's easier when we go there to buy just a few small items, but planning to buy a load of furniture requires a totally different approach.
We will redecorate the kids' room, set up an office for them, redecorate a huge part of my office and a small part of the kitchen. Anyway, I've learned a lot in the process, and I would like to share with you some tips on planning a big shopping trip (to Ikea or any other place).

1. Set the budget

This is the first and most important step: how much money are you willing to spend? Remember that you will spend money not only on Ikea itself, but also on gas or transportation.

For us, two major issues arose:

a) which Ikea to go to
- the closest Ikea is 200 km in Sevilla, Spain; we can get there on a toll-free highway
- there are 2 Ikea stores in Lisbon, 300 km away; we can get there quickly on a (very expensive) toll highway
The obvious choice would be Sevilla, right? Wrong…

b) transportation
- the stuff we want to buy will not fit on either of our cars
- we can use Ikea transport service or we can rent a van (but can not cross the border with it)

We did the math and apparently it's cheaper to go to Lisbon on a rented van... However, we must take into account that Ikea prices in different countries may be different - and indeed they are. The same shopping list is 25 euros more expensive in Lisbon than in Sevilla. Anyway, we decided for Lisbon and the rented van.

So now you should subtract the money you'll spend on transportation to your budget - and now the fun begins!

Quanto dinheiro estou disposta a gastar?

a) a qual loja Ikea devemos ir?

Errado…

            b) transporte

2. Make 2 shopping lists

Yes, that's right, 2 shopping lists.

One with the items you MUST buy, the ones you really, really need. For us, it's all the furniture for the kids' room (I sold all their old furniture). You may use the cool Ikea program to make your shopping list. It gives you the price of each item and the total price, the availability of the items, where they are located within the shop and the total number of packages and total weight.

After you add the really important items to your list, add those that you don't really need, but that you want anyway (for me, candles, frames, and stuff like that). Keep checking the total price - be careful not to surpass your budget!

Once the total price of all the items in your shopping list is close to the amount you have previously established, stop. If you want more stuff, add it to the second list (on my second list, or wishlist, there's an Alvine Rand rug and a Skruvsta chair - I don't really need them, they're expensive, but I'll get them someday...).

Now print the shopping list (the first one) and take a good look at it. Do you have everything you need? Did you take measurements to see if everything will fit? If so, you're good and almost ready to go!

But, before you move on, take yet another look. Do you really need everything on the list? Can some of the items be bought on a next trip to Ikea? I’ve reduced my shopping list significantly using this approach…

3. Set the date

Set a specific date and time to go shopping. That way, you can clear your calendar for that day and plan ahead in order to get a babysitter or to rent the right vehicle.

3. Marcar a data

4. Dress adequately

I'm sure you don't want to spend the entire day at Ikea wearing high-heels! Dress comfortably - but stylish, of course! I'm planning on wearing a pair of snickers and jeans with a simple top. Bag-wise, one that fits across the shoulders is better, so I won't have to constantly readjust it...

4. Usar roupa adequada

5. Bring water and snacks

Water is obvious; you don’t want to get dehydrated… As for snacks, I usually have lunch at Ikea’s restaurant, but I’m not a huge fan of the food (those Swedish meatballs are just not for me…). Bringing some alternatives, such as energy bars or cookies, should be considered.

And I think that’s it! I’ll let you know in a few days how my big trip to Ikea went!

Things I like lately

I have to admit, I'm kinda tired of summer and vacations (school vacations, to be accurate)...
I've been organizing and decluttering my home and my life for the New Year (that's September to me), and we're in the middle of renovating the kids' room.

Here some of things I've been loving lately:

- planning our big trip to Ikea (here and here)

- renovating the kids' room

- getting my oldest son ready to go to first grade

- trying to stay on track with Jillian Michaels' "Making the Cut" program

- School Sparks, a website and blog with lots of information and tips to help kids start school (and a lot of printables for kids, too!)

- Life... Your Way, a website and blog about finances, food, motherhood, success, parenting, everyday life (with a lot of printables, too!)

- Modern Simplicity, a blog about a "simple green living with modern style"

-  Creative Organizing, written by professional organizer Abby Garvey, is filled with a lot of organizing tips and printables (and it's a joy to go through her pictures of beautifully organized spaces)

- Simple Organized Living, is a blog about a simple and organized living (focusing on frugallity and downsizing), also written by a professional organizer, Andrea Dekker

- Becoming Minimalist, focusing on the advantages of owning less and living more

I wish you all a perfect weekend!

My GTD planner ~ A minha agenda GTD

As I said before, I use the GTD method in my everyday life. One of the most important aspects of GTD implementation is the planner. Each person should set up its own planner in the most suitable way, of course, but some general guidelines can be found on David Allen's website.
I've already showed you my planner here, but I've been preparing my new planner for the upcoming New Year (for me, that's September, not January), so I thought I'd give you a in-depth tour to how I plan my life...

~ It's a medium-size (A5) binder with several sections

Sections ~ Separadores

Inbox ~ Caixa de entrada

This is were I write all the information that I don't have time to process or analyse at the moment (ideas, thoughts, reminders, things to buy, information to search online, emails to send, phone calls to make, etc.). Then, usually during the weekly review (more on that on a future post), I process all that information. Processing can be several things, such as writing in the calendar, or in one of the action lists or file for future reference.
I have other inboxes, such as the inbox tray at work and another one at home, where all the papers, letters, bills, end up, waiting to be processed. At work, I try to empty my inbox everyday. At home, I usually do it on the weekend, during my weekly review, unless it's something urgent.

I only write day-specific appointments (e.g., meetings), day-specific actions (e.g., make some important phone call) and important information for that day (e.g., somebody's birthday) in the calendar. We should not write our to-do lists here, because they often don't match the reality of our day and we eventually end up writing the same things in more than one place, adding nothing but entropy to the planner. I'd rather write my to-dos for the week on a post-it and stick it to the calendar.
I'm actually printing the calendar pages myself now, instead of buying a planner and ripping off the pages like I did in the past. I use a template found here and tweaked it up a little on excel, to fit my binder better.

Expense tracker ~ Despesas

Here I write down the money I spend each day. I use excel for my monthly budgets and account movements, as explained here.

Nesta secção aponto as despesas diárias.

Action lists are lists of small things that should be completed in a near future. The lists should be divided according to context (my lists are: office, lab, errands, home/family, self). When completed, each item on the list is immediatelly crossed off.

Projects ~ Projectos

Projects that require more than one action to be finished. For instance, writing a scientific article is a (big) project that can be further divided into several smaller actions, such as reading other articles, data analyses, writing the article. I'm not a multitasker, so I try to have only 2-3 work projects at the same time.

Waiting for ~ À espera

Projects and actions that others are supposed to be doing, that are important for me and don't depend on me to be completed. I have three different waiting for lists, divided by context.

Someday/Maybe ~ Algum dia/Talvez

Lists of projects or actions I would like to do in the future, but that are not urgent or important for now.

Finally, I carry my planner everywhere, except during weekends. I also have a household planner, but more on that on a future post.
And what about you, what is your planner organized??

8 health habits that will improve your life

~ Exercise at least 30 minutes every day
Everyone knows the advantages of exercising frequently. So, if you can, go to the gym as often as possible (but don’t over do it). Combine cardio and weight training. Choose activities that are not only demanding but also fun (for me, that’s tennis and spinning). Go outdoors as often as you can (or as often as the weather allows…). Don’t spend your time seated on your butt – move!

~ Leave the car at home and walk to work
Not everyone lives close enough to their job to do this, but if you do, give it a try. Besides saving money on gas or public transportation, it’s good for your health and for the environment!
I started walking to the university last year, inspired by Astrid, who takes 45 minute walks to work in rainy Bergen, Norway. It’s only a 25-min walk for me, but it feels so good, especially during winter (when it’s not raining, of course!). The days I walk to work I wear comfortable shoes such as ballet flats or snickers, and take a small backpack with my personal stuff, instead of a shoulder bag. And I never forget my mp3 player!

E nunca me esqueço do meu leitor de mp3!

~ Take the stairs
If you can’t squeeze in 30 minutes a day to exercise properly, taking the stairs instead of the elevator will make a huge difference! It’s good not only for your legs, butt and heart, but also for the environment!

~ Eat breakfast every day
Everyone knows that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but how many of us take the time in the morning to seat and have a proper breakfast? I sure didn’t for many years… I would go to classes on an empty stomach and ended up eating junk food before lunch – I’m sure all of you have gone through this at some point. If you feel that you don’t have time to eat breakfast in the morning, set the alarm 10 minutes earlier. If you’re not hungry when you wake up (that’s usually my case), don’t eat before going to bed or eat when you get to work – just don’t skip it!

~ Have enough sleep every night (neither too much nor too less)
It has been a rather old dream of mine to become an early riser. The correlation between  rising early and success is pretty obvious - how many successful people sleep in?? Don't get me wrong, I usually wake up between 7 and 8 am on work days and always before 9 am on weekends. By early riser I mean, really early - like 6 am! Sometimes I wake up at 6.30 to go to the gym, but I want to turn it into a habit. Starting in September, after my vacation, is to get up at 6:00 every day, work a little on the computer, have breakfast and be at the gym by 7.
Like Steve Pavlina, I believe the key to turn this into a successful habit is to set the alarm and get up everyday at the same time, no matter what. At night, I think it's more logical to go to bed when we're sleepy rather than going to be at a predetermined hour everyday - our body will let us know.
Anyway, check out this interesting site about sleep.

É um antigo sonho meu tornar-me madrugadora.

~ Eat a diversified diet
Unless you’re dieting to lose/gain weight or for medical reasons, I believe our diet should be diverse – and as far as I’m concerned (and I’m not a doctor – well, actually, I am, but not a medical one…), there are no forbidden foods. The quantity is the key. I, for instance, eat more fruits and vegetables, lean meat and fish, but I also eat fast food and other junk foods from time to time. I do eat chocolate mostly every day, but I switched from milk chocolate to dark chocolate, and because the dark one has more cocoa, I feel satisfied with less.

~ Drink water – a lot of it!
While being easy during summer, in the winter I must have a bottle of water in my desk to remind me that I must drink it, even when I’m not thirsty.

~ Take care of your body
I don’t advocate spending endless hours in front of the mirror or spending tons of money in beauty care, but giving some attention to your hair, your skin and your nails will make you feel more confident. And confident people tend to succeed in life!
If you’re not willing to spend money on beauty care, do it yourself at home (that’s usually what I do). And if you feel like you don’t have enough time for it, try to divide your beauty care along the week. For instance, on Mondays fix your eyebrows, on Tuesdays take care of your hair, do a manicure on Wednesdays, and so on…

Chocolate cake with cookies ~ Salame de chocolate

In Portugal, we call this chocolate salame (salame de chocolate) - and this is one my favourite cakes (and one of the easiest too). Wanna try it? Here's how:

Ingredients:

~ 5 yolks
~ 200 g chocolate powder
~ 125 g butter
~ 150 g cookies (Maria cookies)
~ 150 g sugar

Melt the butter, add the yolks one by one, the chocolate, the cookies in small pieces and the sugar. Mix everything. Shape it into a roll and wrap with aluminum foil. Put in the the freezer for an hour or so until it hardens. And that's it!
