Things I like lately

I have to admit, I'm kinda tired of summer and vacations (school vacations, to be accurate)...
I've been organizing and decluttering my home and my life for the New Year (that's September to me), and we're in the middle of renovating the kids' room.

Here some of things I've been loving lately:

- planning our big trip to Ikea (here and here)

- renovating the kids' room

- getting my oldest son ready to go to first grade

- trying to stay on track with Jillian Michaels' "Making the Cut" program

- School Sparks, a website and blog with lots of information and tips to help kids start school (and a lot of printables for kids, too!)

- Life... Your Way, a website and blog about finances, food, motherhood, success, parenting, everyday life (with a lot of printables, too!)

- Modern Simplicity, a blog about a "simple green living with modern style"

-  Creative Organizing, written by professional organizer Abby Garvey, is filled with a lot of organizing tips and printables (and it's a joy to go through her pictures of beautifully organized spaces)

- Simple Organized Living, is a blog about a simple and organized living (focusing on frugallity and downsizing), also written by a professional organizer, Andrea Dekker

- Becoming Minimalist, focusing on the advantages of owning less and living more

I wish you all a perfect weekend!

My GTD planner ~ A minha agenda GTD

As I said before, I use the GTD method in my everyday life. One of the most important aspects of GTD implementation is the planner. Each person should set up its own planner in the most suitable way, of course, but some general guidelines can be found on David Allen's website.
I've already showed you my planner here, but I've been preparing my new planner for the upcoming New Year (for me, that's September, not January), so I thought I'd give you a in-depth tour to how I plan my life...

~ It's a medium-size (A5) binder with several sections

Sections ~ Separadores

Inbox ~ Caixa de entrada

This is were I write all the information that I don't have time to process or analyse at the moment (ideas, thoughts, reminders, things to buy, information to search online, emails to send, phone calls to make, etc.). Then, usually during the weekly review (more on that on a future post), I process all that information. Processing can be several things, such as writing in the calendar, or in one of the action lists or file for future reference.
I have other inboxes, such as the inbox tray at work and another one at home, where all the papers, letters, bills, end up, waiting to be processed. At work, I try to empty my inbox everyday. At home, I usually do it on the weekend, during my weekly review, unless it's something urgent.

I only write day-specific appointments (e.g., meetings), day-specific actions (e.g., make some important phone call) and important information for that day (e.g., somebody's birthday) in the calendar. We should not write our to-do lists here, because they often don't match the reality of our day and we eventually end up writing the same things in more than one place, adding nothing but entropy to the planner. I'd rather write my to-dos for the week on a post-it and stick it to the calendar.
I'm actually printing the calendar pages myself now, instead of buying a planner and ripping off the pages like I did in the past. I use a template found here and tweaked it up a little on excel, to fit my binder better.

Expense tracker ~ Despesas

Here I write down the money I spend each day. I use excel for my monthly budgets and account movements, as explained here.

Nesta secção aponto as despesas diárias.

Action lists are lists of small things that should be completed in a near future. The lists should be divided according to context (my lists are: office, lab, errands, home/family, self). When completed, each item on the list is immediatelly crossed off.

Projects ~ Projectos

Projects that require more than one action to be finished. For instance, writing a scientific article is a (big) project that can be further divided into several smaller actions, such as reading other articles, data analyses, writing the article. I'm not a multitasker, so I try to have only 2-3 work projects at the same time.

Waiting for ~ À espera

Projects and actions that others are supposed to be doing, that are important for me and don't depend on me to be completed. I have three different waiting for lists, divided by context.

Someday/Maybe ~ Algum dia/Talvez

Lists of projects or actions I would like to do in the future, but that are not urgent or important for now.

Mix/Contacts ~ Mix/Contactos

Where I store important personal information, important dates, wish lists, contacts (only the most important ones, such as doctors and family) and stuff like that.

Fitness

Here I track my workouts, using this template.

Finally, I carry my planner everywhere, except during weekends. I also have a household planner, but more on that on a future post.
And what about you, what is your planner organized??

8 health habits that will improve your life

~ Exercise at least 30 minutes every day
Everyone knows the advantages of exercising frequently. So, if you can, go to the gym as often as possible (but don’t over do it). Combine cardio and weight training. Choose activities that are not only demanding but also fun (for me, that’s tennis and spinning). Go outdoors as often as you can (or as often as the weather allows…). Don’t spend your time seated on your butt – move!

~ Leave the car at home and walk to work
Not everyone lives close enough to their job to do this, but if you do, give it a try. Besides saving money on gas or public transportation, it’s good for your health and for the environment!
I started walking to the university last year, inspired by Astrid, who takes 45 minute walks to work in rainy Bergen, Norway. It’s only a 25-min walk for me, but it feels so good, especially during winter (when it’s not raining, of course!). The days I walk to work I wear comfortable shoes such as ballet flats or snickers, and take a small backpack with my personal stuff, instead of a shoulder bag. And I never forget my mp3 player!

E nunca me esqueço do meu leitor de mp3!

~ Take the stairs
If you can’t squeeze in 30 minutes a day to exercise properly, taking the stairs instead of the elevator will make a huge difference! It’s good not only for your legs, butt and heart, but also for the environment!

~ Eat breakfast every day
Everyone knows that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but how many of us take the time in the morning to seat and have a proper breakfast? I sure didn’t for many years… I would go to classes on an empty stomach and ended up eating junk food before lunch – I’m sure all of you have gone through this at some point. If you feel that you don’t have time to eat breakfast in the morning, set the alarm 10 minutes earlier. If you’re not hungry when you wake up (that’s usually my case), don’t eat before going to bed or eat when you get to work – just don’t skip it!

~ Have enough sleep every night (neither too much nor too less)
It has been a rather old dream of mine to become an early riser. The correlation between  rising early and success is pretty obvious - how many successful people sleep in?? Don't get me wrong, I usually wake up between 7 and 8 am on work days and always before 9 am on weekends. By early riser I mean, really early - like 6 am! Sometimes I wake up at 6.30 to go to the gym, but I want to turn it into a habit. Starting in September, after my vacation, is to get up at 6:00 every day, work a little on the computer, have breakfast and be at the gym by 7.
Like Steve Pavlina, I believe the key to turn this into a successful habit is to set the alarm and get up everyday at the same time, no matter what. At night, I think it's more logical to go to bed when we're sleepy rather than going to be at a predetermined hour everyday - our body will let us know.
Anyway, check out this interesting site about sleep.

É um antigo sonho meu tornar-me madrugadora.

~ Eat a diversified diet
Unless you’re dieting to lose/gain weight or for medical reasons, I believe our diet should be diverse – and as far as I’m concerned (and I’m not a doctor – well, actually, I am, but not a medical one…), there are no forbidden foods. The quantity is the key. I, for instance, eat more fruits and vegetables, lean meat and fish, but I also eat fast food and other junk foods from time to time. I do eat chocolate mostly every day, but I switched from milk chocolate to dark chocolate, and because the dark one has more cocoa, I feel satisfied with less.

~ Drink water – a lot of it!
While being easy during summer, in the winter I must have a bottle of water in my desk to remind me that I must drink it, even when I’m not thirsty.

~ Take care of your body
I don’t advocate spending endless hours in front of the mirror or spending tons of money in beauty care, but giving some attention to your hair, your skin and your nails will make you feel more confident. And confident people tend to succeed in life!
If you’re not willing to spend money on beauty care, do it yourself at home (that’s usually what I do). And if you feel like you don’t have enough time for it, try to divide your beauty care along the week. For instance, on Mondays fix your eyebrows, on Tuesdays take care of your hair, do a manicure on Wednesdays, and so on…

Chocolate cake with cookies ~ Salame de chocolate

In Portugal, we call this chocolate salame (salame de chocolate) - and this is one my favourite cakes (and one of the easiest too). Wanna try it? Here's how:

Ingredients:

~ 5 yolks
~ 200 g chocolate powder
~ 125 g butter
~ 150 g cookies (Maria cookies)
~ 150 g sugar

Melt the butter, add the yolks one by one, the chocolate, the cookies in small pieces and the sugar. Mix everything. Shape it into a roll and wrap with aluminum foil. Put in the the freezer for an hour or so until it hardens. And that's it!

Making the cut starts now!

I finally got my copy of Jillian Michales' book Making the Cut. I'm eager to get started!

According to her fitness test, my overall fitness condition is above average. Nice! My first impressions of Jillian's book are the following:

~ her workouts seem SO HARD!!!
~ the recipes she presents are very American - not suitable at all for us here in southern Portugal... So, I'll follow her basic principles, but stick with the mediterranean kind of foods.

I'm starting the Making the Cut 30-day program on Tuesday (Monday is a holliday here). My fourth week will be spent in Greece, so I'll probably have to stop the program by then... Anyway, whish me luck!

~

Finalmente recebi o livro da Jillian Michaels "Making the Cut".

Ainda bem!

Seja como for, desejem-me sorte!

Season colour analysis ~ Análise de cor - método sazonal

I have always liked clothes, shoes and accessories (fashion, not as much). After going through a number of different styles (from surfer girl during my teenage years, to high heels and blazers after becoming a mother, and badly-dressed kind of hippie during college years), now that I'm in my early 30's I can finally say that I've found MY style. The style that suits me. And, most important, the right colours.

~

I have always been rather dichromatic when it comes to my wardrobe. My favourite colour was brown, which was usually combined with black or white or beige. But I always felt like something was wrong with the colour palette I was wearing. A few years ago I added more colour and prints to my wardrobe. Reds, violet, pink, yellow... but still, it never felt quite right.

Vermelhos, violeta, rosa, amarelo... Mas continuava a sentir algo errado nisto.

~

In the last year, I've been drawn to greys, blacks, dark blues and white - lots of white. And it feels right! My natural colours pop out, and I feel prettier than ever!

So, because I'm a scientist and I like to understand the unknown, I did a little research on the internet - and I was drawn to Season Colour Analysis.

In a few words, people fit in one of the four seasons: winter, spring, summer or autumn, depending on their natural skin, hair and eye colour. For each season, there's a specific colour palette. Using the right colours, the ones adequate for our season, will make us glow, whilst the wrong ones will make us dull.

I quickly realised that I am a Winter! I have olive skin, dark hair (not black, but dark brown) and brown eyes. Within the winter type, I'm a dark or deep winter (the terminology changes among websites).
Among my best colours are... royal and navy blue, charcoal grey, black and white. Right on the spot!

E parece-me bem!

~

I put together collages of several outfits. I'm not showing my face in most of the pictures, but I do remember how I felt wearing these clothes... and believe me, using my colours really makes all the difference regarding my self-esteem and security.

Good winter colours - navy blue, white, grey
Boas cores de inverno - azul marinho, branco, cinzento

Good winter colours - black, grey, burgundy (LOVE that short dress)
Boas cores de inverno - preto, cinzento, vermelho escuro (ADORO aquele vestido curto)

Bad winter colours - light-medium browns, soft pink, pastels

Can you see the difference (or is it just me)??

Again Ikea

Oh boy, I'm excited! I've been seeling some of my furniture (already sold everything in the kids' room), and today I sold my kitchen table and chairs. We're going to Ikea in Sevilla in 2 weeks, and this is what I'll get for the kitchen: a Melltorp table and Laver chairs. Can't wait!

Estou toda entusiasmada! Mal posso esperar!

Preparing a big trip to Ikea

Oh boy, I'm excited! I'm planning a big trip to Ikea to buy new furniture for my kids' room and some other things for home... Here's a sneek peak of some of the items on my shopping list:

Estou super entusiasmada!

For my office
Para o meu escritório

For the kids' room and their office

For the kids' bathroom
Para a casa de banho dos míudos

There are a few other items on my list, such as Ikea PS candleholder or a Mysa Rönn quilt and some candles...
Regarding the Skruvsta office chair, I don't know for sure if I'll get it or not... First of all, I really don't need it, second, it's too expensive, and third, my cats' claws will eventually ruin the fabric...

There's another item though that I would LOVE to get... the beautiful grey and white Alvine Rand rug... But again, it's too expensive, I don't need it now in the summer (and usually it's hot here in the Algarve till early November...) and again, cats' claws... Oh, well, I'll be pretty busy as it is redecorating around the house with all the new furniture I'm buying, so I guess I can forget the chair and the rug for now...

Weekend Diary

Hello everyone! How is your weekend going? Mine can be summarized in one word: beach.
Making use of a (dirty) window at our house to show you my outfit throughout the weekend:

Yesterday we had to cut our palm tree... It died because it was attacked by the red pal weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus), a species of beetle originated from tropical regions. It arrived in Portugal in 2007 and has been responsible for the death of several species of palm trees mostly in the Algarve... Here's the little bug - we caught it coming out of the tree after we cut it...

In the meantime, my kids won't get out of the water...

And now I can say for sure that my favourite jazz album is the soundtrack of "L'Ascenseur pour l'Echafaud", by Miles Davis. It's quite an unknown album (my cousin, a jazz musician, had never heard of this album before), recorded in Paris in 1957 and described by jazz critic Phil Johnson as "the loneliest trumpet sound you will ever hear, and the model for sad-core music ever since. Hear it and weep".
According to Wikipedia, "Davis only gave the musicians a few rudimentary harmonic sequences he had assembled in his hotel room, and, once the plot was explained, the band improvised without any precomposed theme, while edited loops of the musically relevant film sequences were projected in the background."
